Aug. 27, 1960: A man identified as Charlie Griffin says he was accosted on a Downtown street and was later struck in the head with an ax handle during the civil unrest that followed attempts by members of the Jacksonville branch NAACP Youth Council to sit-in at the F.W. Woolworth's lunch counter and other segregated facilities in Jacksonville, Florida. Life reported that there were 105 arrests and 50 injuries on and around Ax Handle Saturday.
